The Grass is Greener on the Other Side
Have you found yourself in the situation where you just moved into your new home and you want life to get back to normal, allowing you to relax in your beautiful new surroundings? Well, you’re almost there, except you need a new lawn!
Putting in a lawn doesn’t have to be a daunting task. If you have the time and the tools, you can achieve a successful, beautiful lawn in weeks.
Watering is one of the most critical steps in the process, as the ground must be kept moist for a minimum of three weeks. Hopefully Mother Nature will step in and help out.
It takes 21 days for grass seed to germinate. Ideal weather temperature needed for germination is 60 degrees and above. Typically the month of July is not favorable for planting, due to long stretches of hot, dry days. However, watering is key and if maintained daily, planting can be successful any time between May and September.
The tools you’ll need to plant your lawn include seed (a 50% bluegrass blend is recommended), fertilizer, tiller, leveling system (Gill), spreader, lawn rake and mulch.
Here’s the process:
1. Prepare the ground with tiller, covering entire area to be seeded.
2. Gill tilled area to level peaks and valleys.
3. Remove stones and other debris from lawn area.
4. Use spreader to dispense seed.
5. Spread fertilizer.
6. Rake seed and fertilizer into ground lightly.
7. Mulch with straw to support moisture and seed retention.
8. Start watering process immediately, and keep moist.
There you have your tools to delve forward and make it greener on your side of the fence.
